When people think about movement these days they tend to think about generic exercise. People crammed into a gym or class. It is often associated with getting fit, losing weight or building up muscles.
Now all of those things are great, but they’re certainly not for everyone. That together with modern life, which is taking away the need for movement, and people are beginning to move less and less.
Which is a huge shame because we are born to move! And due to this there are some very cool side effects that people are missing out on.
Here are 3 brilliant reasons to move more;
1) Have More Energy
Although it may seem counterintuitive one of the best ways to reduce feelings of fatigue and sluggishness is to move. When we move regularly we get bigger doses of mood enhancing and energy promoting hormones. Coupled with better circulation and the fact that we often sleep better when we’re active and you’re bound to feel more energetic in no time!
2) Think, Learn & Remember Better
Movement has been show to support brain function by encouraging new neurons to grow and thrive. This in turn helps slow age related mental decline, lower stress levels and maintain existing brain structures. Moving also helps increase substances found in the brain that are involved in learning and memory.
3) Feel Capable, Empowered and Proud
By moving regularly we create opportunities to improve how our body functions making day to day activities easier. You don’t have to worry about getting off the floor or climbing the stairs. You can lift or drag things in the garden. Playing with the kids or walking the dog becomes much more enjoyable. Plus the more capable you feel the more you’re likely to explore new challenges. Maybe trying a new sport or hobby. Or going on a more adventurous holiday. Or doing something you haven’t done since you were a child. The best bit about becoming a bit more capable is it can lead you to feeling confident and proud in yourself, which leads you to more movement, which keeps you feeling empowered as well as benefiting from all of the other effects of moving more!
So what now?
Get moving! To begin with it doesn’t really matter what you do. Start with something appropriate for you, focus on moving well, and then you can move on to different challenges when you’re ready.
